Michael Oher’s Adoptive Mom Hosting New Reality TV Show

Michael Oher’s homelessness to the NFL success story has captivated millions.

Now his adoptive mom, Leigh Ann Tuohy, is trying to help more boys and girls while bringing awareness to adoption in America.

Tuohy is hosting a new reality television show called, “Family Addition,” which premieres Friday, June 7 at 9 p.m. ET on the UP network.

The show follows different families each episode as they go through the emotional, physical and practical process of adopting a new family member. It also includes making over part of their homes to accommodate the new addition.

Tuohy, who was played by Sandra Bullock in the hit movie “The Blind Side,” will provide the series’ creative vision and oversee the home improvement projects on each episode. Tuohy is the co-owner of a Memphis-based interior design firm.

The show will also feature Tuohy’s daughter, Collins Tuohy, who is an inspirational speaker and co-owner of Whimsy Cookie Company, and Special Educator Sue Mitchell, who helped Oher with his schoolwork. Each will provide support to the families as they transition.

Oher knew of his mom’s new show, but did not indicate that he would be a featured guest. Oher did make a cameo on an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” in May 2010.

“A lot of people need help,” Oher said Sunday at a charity softball event. “Who knows how many other kids can be successful in life with a little bit of help.”

Tuohy spoke about the show and her mission to help adoptive families, which she also takes on with “The Making it Happen Foundation,” on Katie Couric’s daytime talk show, “Katie.”

“In our family we have a motto: birth parents aren’t always the right parents and families always don’t have to match,” Tuohy said.
