Independence. Freedom. Red, White and Blue. Land of the free because of the Brave. This weekend we celebrate July 4th. In our house we also celebrate SJ’s birthday and he thinks each year fireworks are just for him! (We’ll let him continue to believe that ) But, I want to go deep for a second. Read these words….
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Whoa. That is from The Declaration of Independence. I had to look up “unalienable rights”. It means something that is impossible to take away or give up. What makes me stop and pause is thinking about children without love or security. Without a forever family. A family should not be something that can be taken away or given up, yet here we are championing for hundreds of thousands of children in need of one. Where is their life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness within the foster care system?
Please meet Bernard. He is 15 years old and lives in Alabama. He is in need of his forever family. Take one look at his smile and you can see kindness and gentleness. He loves music and being outside. He is mostly non verbal but can be very affectionate! He loves smiling and dancing. Can you be that special family for Bernard, or do you know someone who can.
